Top 3 Tips to Extend the Life of Your Mattress

A mattress is somewhere you spend a lot of your time.  It makes sense to spend a little more money on your mattress and get a good quality, luxurious mattress.  It doesn’t matter if you go for a specific brand named mattress such as Silent Night or Miracoil a mattress, without regular maintenance and care will have its lifespan shortened.  It makes sense that anything you spend a good amount of money on you should be looking after correctly.  You can potentially double the lifespan of your mattress by taking the following steps:

Buy a protective mattress cover

This is the single best way you can extend the life on your mattress.  Any mattress, be it a pocket sprung mattress or a memory foam mattress has a layer of material the covers the springs or is just foam.  When you sleep, you sweat and this sweat can make the foam or material damp and ruin it.  A mattress protector typically goes over your mattress under your sheets and stops this perspiration making it to your mattress.  They are easy to put on and take off and can be washed monthly to keep your bed as fresh as possible.  They can be picked up from a lot of online retailers, just make sure to pick one that is compatible with your mattress size.

Turning and flipping your mattress

The other biggest action you can take to extend the life of your mattress is to rotate it and flip it regularly.  A lot of mattresses claim that they do not need to be turned and flipped but you will still extend the life of that mattress by giving it even wear.  It is recommended that you turn it by 180 degrees every week then the next week, flip it over, then rotate it, then flip it, week by week.  By doing this, you will be able to far extend the life of your mattress and give you the most even support when you sleep.

Air out your mattress and clean from time to time

Every month, it is a good idea to take all the covers and sheets off your mattress for a few hours during the day.  This will allow any trapped moisture inside the mattress to evaporate and also give you a good opportunity to clean your mattress.  You can use upholstery clearer normally but you will find that most mattress manufacturers will provide you with detailed cleaning instructions and often offer their own solution.  Always follow manufacturers guidelines over and above the guidelines noted here.  This will allow you to get rid of any stains on the mattress from food to perspiration that has built up over time.

All the things noted above will allow you to extend the life of any mattress.  Some are more relevant than others such as you are likely to get more benefit from flipping a spring mattress than you will get from a memory foam mattress.  It will however not do your memory foam mattress any harm so is worth doing for the potential benefits.
